Nimona is a 2023 American 3D computer-animated comedy-adventure film directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane, produced by DNEG Animation and Annapurna Pictures. It was released in select theaters on June 23, 2023, and released on Netflix on June 30. It is based off the 2012 webcomic and 2015 graphic novel of the same name.

Nimona began as a production of Blue Sky Studios and 20th Century Studios. Following the Disney acquisition of 20th Century Fox and the film's subsequent cancellation, Annapurna and Netflix picked up the film, retaining the cast, assets, and much of the same Blue Sky staff to finish the film. Due to the change in studio and pipelines, the production had to start the animation from scratch, however the former Blue Sky staff used their prior R&D work as a template for the new production: test footage leaked from Blue Sky's version appear virtually identical to scenes from the completed film. The film's end credits include the names of the entire staff of Blue Sky Studios, as a tribute to the animation studio that began work on the film.

Production[]

Blue Sky Studios went into production on a film adaptation of the webcomic Nimona, the film had a release date set for January 14, 2022; however, on February 9, 2021, Disney announced that it was closing Blue Sky Studios and canceling the film. According to reports, when Nimona was canceled, it was already 75% completed. Co-director Troy Quane, who along with Nick Bruno took over as director while the film was still at Blue Sky, later clarified that they were approximately 70% done with the layout, and had completed character models, story reels, and locations, with only around five sequences of completed animation.[1]

On April 11, 2022, it was announced that Annapurna Pictures had revived the project, with DNEG Feature Animation taking over production, and re-set the film for June 30th, 2023 to release on Netflix.

Cast[]

  • Chloë Grace Moretz as Nimona
  • Riz Ahmed as Blackheart
  • Eugene Lee Yang as Goldenloin

Trivia[]

  • Under Blue Sky, the film was reported to be the studio's most complex film to date: the team wanted to utilize an art style combining 2D animation techniques with 3D, similar to their work on The Peanuts Movie.
  • Had the film been finished under Blue Sky, it is believed it would have followed a screenplay written by Marc Haimes. Haimes is still credited as story writer for the finished film.
  • At one point in the film, Nimona passes by a billboard with graffitied words on it that reads "Blue Sky Never Dies."
  • The end credits' section for Blue Sky includes an image of Nimona as a squirrel eating an acorn, a nod to Scrat, Blue Sky's mascot, and "The End", the final piece of animation done by the studio before its closure.
