Nimona would have been the second Blue Sky Studios film produced by 20th Century Studios and released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures after Spies in Disguise.
Under Blue Sky, the film was reported to be the studio's most complex film to date: the team wanted to utilize an art style combining 2D animation techniques with 3D, similar to their work on The Peanuts Movie.
Had the film been finished under Blue Sky, it is believed it would have followed a screenplay written by Marc Haimes and a score by Ludwig Göransson. Haimes is still credited as story writer for the finished film.
At one point in the film, Nimona passes by a billboard with graffitied words on it that reads "Blue Sky Never Dies."
The end credits' section for Blue Sky includes an image of Nimona as a squirrel eating an acorn, a nod to Scrat, Blue Sky's mascot, and "The End", the final piece of animation done by the studio before its closure.
